How Often Should a Car Be Maintained? Detailed Maintenance Knowledge
After driving for more than ten years, I have seen too many car owners who either spend unnecessary money on excessive maintenance or damage their engines by delaying maintenance because they cannot figure out the maintenance cycle. In fact, the maintenance cycle is not a fixed number; it must be comprehensively judged based on mileage, time, and driving environment. Today, I will share the practical experience I have summarized with you.
I. Basic Maintenance Cycle: Engine Oil Type Is the Core
Based on experience, the type of engine oil directly determines the core maintenance cycle. Mineral oil has average oxidation resistance and cleaning ability; I suggest strictly controlling it to 5,000 kilometers or 6 months, whichever comes first, then go for maintenance. Semi-synthetic oil can last up to 7,500 kilometers or 9 months, suitable for most family cars. Fully synthetic oil has the best performance; for German cars such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz that use fully synthetic oil, the maintenance cycle can be extended to 10,000 to 15,000 kilometers, but do not exceed 12 months in terms of time. For Japanese cars such as Sylphy and Civic, the basic cycle is mostly 5,000 kilometers or half a year; turbocharged versions need to be properly shortened, otherwise carbon deposits are likely to form.
II. Driving Environment: The “Variable” That Determines the Cycle
A common situation is that the maintenance cycle must be flexibly adjusted according to different driving environments. If you drive in congested road sections every day and the idling time exceeds 1 hour, the loss of engine oil will be faster than normal driving. In this case, I suggest shortening the cycle by 15% to 30%; for example, if the original maintenance was at 10,000 kilometers, it should be done at 7,000 kilometers now. If you often drive on highways and the proportion of driving at a speed exceeding 90 kilometers per hour is more than 60%, the engine working condition is stable, and the cycle can be extended by 10% to 20%. In addition, when driving in dusty, high-temperature or high-humidity places, the air filter is easy to get dirty, so it is necessary to check and replace it in advance, and the maintenance interval also needs to be shortened. For vehicles parked for a long time, even if the mileage is not reached, the engine oil must be changed every 12 months to prevent oil oxidation and deterioration.
III. Maintenance Notes for Newbies
Over the years, I have found that newbies are most likely to step on two pitfalls: excessive maintenance and ignoring the requirements of the warranty period. Engine oil is not changed as frequently as possible; frequent replacement may even damage the engine’s running-in layer. For transmission oil, the specification for most models is to replace it every 60,000 to 80,000 kilometers, no need to replace it in advance. For vehicles within the warranty period, you must have maintenance done at an authorized 4S store and keep complete records, otherwise it may affect the warranty. If you want to save money, you can buy original air filters and air conditioning filters online and replace them yourself, which is much cheaper than replacing them in the store. You can also pay attention to the maintenance packages of 4S stores, which often have discounts such as buy three get one free.
